Still Gardening welcomes new volunteer Garden Mates. Our Garden Mates are keen to see older people and their carers stay healthy and able to manage their gardens, so they can stay in their own homes. Our Garden Mates do this by working WITH clients in their gardens, and identifying ways to make gardening more low maintenance.
Garden Mates and Clients both benefit from fresh air, physical activity, having a chat, exchanging information and just doing what they love…….gardening. A Garden Mate can commit to just a few hours a week, a few hours a month or just an occasional visit, and can choose to be matched with one client only, or with more than one client.
Our Peer Educators are not gardening experts but people with an interest in gardening who enjoy sharing knowledge. They talk with community groups and raise awareness about the benefits of continuing to garden with age. They also talk about ways of making gardening easier and useful tools for the older gardener.
Our Peer Educators and our Garden Mates have individual tasks but are very much a team. Volunteering with Still Gardening is a rewarding experience and a great way to meet new people. Our team looks forward to meeting up on a regular basis, sharing knowledge and gardening tips… with more than a few laughs along the way.
Other Volunteer skills
Our Garden Mates and Peer Educators often have other skills they like to contribute to the program. The program in the past has benefited from plant knowledge, garden assessment & design, web management, data entry, administration, research on gardening, health and tools, contributions to the development of Peer Educator presentations, contributing to program displays and events. We value our volunteers and welcome their contributions to the program.
